Korean Travel Online - Coffee and Kimbap in Gyeongju

Somewhere between Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae in Gyeongju, there is a quaint little coffee shop by the name of 봄날 [bom-nal].

The impressive coffee art on the latte we ordered certainly drew a lot of oohs and aahs from my companions. The coffee itself was very good too.

What's endearing about it is that it looks like a hanok on the outside but inside it most certainly doesn't give off any old fashioned vibe at all from the inside.

Address: 경주시 황남동 221-13번지

Not too far away from Cheomseongdae, there is a famous Kimbap place called 교리김밥 [gyo-ri-kim-bap]. What makes this kimbap different is that it has plenty of egg.

Address: 경상북도 경주시 교동 69

While you are in this area, you might as well drop by Gyeongju Gyodong Beopju. Gyodong Beopju is home-made glutinous rice wine, made from indigenous glutinous rice, wheat and yeast, fermented more than 100 days and produced in the traditional way of brewing.

Korean Travel Online - Seosan's Haemi-eup Seong and Gaesimsa

Seosan is located at the northwestern end of Chungcheongnam-do, bordering on Dangjin-gun, and Hongseong-gun to the east and on Taean-gun to the west.

There's no Starbucks, departments stores, or McDonalds in Seosan. It's a small city and most of the coffee shops and restaurants are situated around the Seosan Bus Terminal. You would think there's nothing to see here but there's actually more than a few beautiful sites to explore, including the Haemi-eup Seong Fortress and Gaesimsa.

Haemi-eup Fortress is one of a few fortresses in Korea, whose original form has been completely preserved, where commander-in-chiefs served, and where Admiral Sun-sin Yi was on duty for 10 months as a military officer in the 12th year of King Seonjo. It is also a martyrs scared ground where about 1,000 Roman Catholic Church believers were executed in the 3rd year (1866AD) of King Gojong.

It was a beautiful sunny day and we saw an ajeossi flying an amazingly long kite. He said it is made up of a total of 95 individual kites. Impressive.

If you are brave enough (or bored enough), you can even walk on the 5 meter high wall. And mind you, it's quite a distance before you can reach the next gate where you can get down.

Gaesimsa is treasure number 143 and one of the four major temples located in Chungcheongnam-do.

One of the ways that temples raise money is through these temple tiles. Donors purchase a temple tile and then write a message, prayer, or wish on the underside. Later, the tiles will be used to re-fit the roof.

The Seosan Tour and Culture website (seosantour.net) is actually more informative than expected and you can find a lot of information about the places worth going to.
