Korean Travel Online - Canoeing at Chuncheon's Mullegil

Chuncheon is great for a day trip if you want to get out of Seoul. It's known for Nami Island, Dakgalbi (spicy marinated chicken), and Makguksu (chilled buckwheat noodle soup). If a stroll down the romantic tree path at Nami Island is not your thing, Mullegil (which literally means water trail) in Chuncheon is the perfect place to go to for some outdoor adventure.

To go to Chuncheon, you can either take the subway on the JungAng line, or take the ITX (Intecity Train Express). The latter is faster and more convenient. You get nice comfortable seats and a nice view. We met at Yongsan station at 8.40am to get on the 9am train. It takes 1hour and 13minutes to get to ChunCheon station (Note: NamChunCheon station is not the same with ChunCheon station). Tickets cost 6,900 won

To get to Mullegil, take the bus 75 at ChunCheon station and get off at SongAm Sports Town (approx 15 mintues)

One you get to there, you'll be greeted by this beautiful view.

There's a coffee shop where you can chill out while waiting. Then you'll be taken to the orientation where they'll give you pointers and tips on how to navigate a canoe. But since they spoke in Korean, I only understood like 30%. But armed with common sense and a basic knowledge, you can paddle away with ease. Really, it's not that hard. If it's your first time and you're unsure, you might want to watch this youtube clip on how paddle efficiently. After about a 20minute orientation, put on those lifevests and head out. Canoe rental is 30,000 won an hour.

You would surely want to take pictures while canoeing. It would be easier to have a camera around your neck. Just to be on the safe side, you might want to put the your phone in a ziplock bag or if you're using a camera, get a waterproof case for it such as Dicapac.
If you haven't had enough fun yet after canoeing, there's also a go-kart track right beside it. You can also read more about Mullegil and its history from this excellent article on the VisitKorea website: Canoeing ChunCheon's Mullegil

All that paddling can make you hungry. So go and find a Dakgalbi place for lunch. Besides, you can't leave ChunCheon without eating Dakgalbi.

After lunch, we went to Soyang Dam and Soyang Lake and headed for CheongPyeong Temple in the mountains. The view of the Dam is so magnificent. Too bad I wasn't able to take pictures because we were in such a hurry. You will have to take a ferry from the lake to the mountain where the temple is located and it takes about 30 minutes to hike up. I'm not a fan of hiking but it's not so bad if you're surrounded by this beautiful scenery on the way up.

A little out of breath, but finally reached the temple.

We were a little out of time because we wanted to catch the 5:00 train back to Seoul. But if you had more time, it would be great to explore the temple more.

Korean Travel Online - Herb Island's Fairy Tale Light Festival

Herb Island's Fairy Tale Light Festival this winter started on December 1, 2012 and is ongoing until April 30, 2013. Similar to the Garden of Morning Calm in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do, the place is draped with colorful lights to make up for the lack of flowers during winter. For more pictures of the Garden of Morning Calm's light festival, go here.

More of a village than an island, this place located in Pocheon, Gyeonggi-do is not as easy to go to if you don't have a car. Unless you're coming from Northern Seoul, it would take you more or less to get here. First, you have to go up all the way to the end of line 1, Soyosan station. From there, you have to take the local bus number 57 that goes to Herb Island. According to the website, the bus only comes once every hour so you have to overestimate the travel time a bit if you don't want to wait for another hour for the next bus. The bus schedule on their website says the bus arrives at 15:50. My train arrived at Soyosan station at 15:50 and I rushed outside to see if I could still catch the bus. At the bus stop, there's one of those computer screens that tell you when the next bus is arriving. It said bus 57 will arrive in 12 minutes. 5 minutes later, the bus arrived. So, it's either the 15:50 bus was 20 minutes late or the bus comes more often than what the website says.

Anyway, from the bus stop, it takes about 20 minutes to reach Herb Island. From where the bus drops you off, you have to walk about 10 minutes to reach Herb Island itself. If you don't have a car, you have to make sure you make back to the bus stop by 19:00 because the last bus is at 19:20.

Arriving around 4:30ish will give you just enough time to walk around and explore the surroundings before the lights come on.

According to the brochure, the place is supposed to be divided into a Italian Village, Greece Village, French Village, and German Village. You can also smell the delicious smell of freshly baked bread a kilometer away, coming from the Herb Island Bakery. By the looks of it, business is going very well.

There's also a pretty neat coffee shop and an aroma shop that sells herb teas, coffee, candy, perfume, herb fragrances, shampoos, lotion and a whole lot more

The best part is the 2,000 square meter herb museum containing around 180 types of plants. Inside, you can smell the different types of plants and see a variety of flowers regardless of the season.

I would say a few hours at Herb Island would be just enough. But you'll be hard pressed for time if you want to wait for total darkness to see the lights shine brightly. If you have a car, this won't be a problem. If not, then you don't want to miss that last bus going back to Soyosan station.

Korean Travel Online - Garden of Morning Calm in Winter

The Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원) is a huge garden with a different themes every season. In winter, since there are no flowers, the garden holds the lighting festival where the whole garden is lit up in beautiful, colorful lights. The garden is open only until 6pm but during the lighting festival, they will remain open until 9pm on weekends. The festival is called the The Five Color Starlight Exhibit and it runs until March 3, 2013. Admission is 7,000 won.

We arrived at the place a little past 5pm, just enough time to take a walk around the place before sundown. At around 5.45, everyone was waiting eagerly for the lights to come on. It was not completely dark yet, but the moment the lights came on, I jumped and let out a little scream. The lights were turned on all at one and that moment was just breathtaking. For more pics of the lighting festival, go here >>> http://on.fb.me/YNU6UH

How to get there:
We originally planned to go via the ITX Train all the way to Cheongpyeong. Then take bus from the station to the garden. However, since the ITX train only has limited departure times, we decided to take the subway instead. From the station, we took the cab to the garden since there was 4 of us anyway.

By ITX: (Either from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni station)
ITX train schedule from korail.com

By regular train:
Make your way to Sangbong station (Seoul subway, Jung-ang line).
Subway map

From here, transfer to the Gyeongchun line and get off at Cheongpyeong station. The trains on the Gyeongchun line don't come as ofter as the other subway lines so refer to the time table below for the train schedules. Left column is the hour, right column is the minutes. For example, first row says train arrives on 05:30 and 05:55
Train schedules departing from Sangbong bound for Cheongpyeong

From Cheongpyeong station, you can either cab it to the garden (costs approx 16,000 won) or take the regular bus. However, the bus doesn't come very often and you might have to wait for an hour or so for the next one. The website at http://morningcalm.co.kr/sub2_02__4.htm (best viewed with Internet Explorer, might not work with Firefox) has the bus schedules. They also say it takes 15 minutes from the train station to the bus terminal.

Another option is to take the City Tour Bus. It's more expensive (5,000 won) but stops at Cheongpyeong Station so you don't have to walk to the terminal. Bus schedules below.
